The United Nations was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II to keep world peace and to stop wars between countries. One of the UN primary purposes is “promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion”, and member states pledge to undertake “joint and separate action” to protect these rights.
